Oprah Interviews Dr. Eben Alexander

Today’s News&Culture update: For those of you who have been following the buzz on Dr. Eben Alexander’s New York Times best-seller, “Proof of Heaven” you won’t want to miss this hour-long interview with Oprah Winfrey on her Super-Soul Sunday series.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Alexander’s ideas and book have been featured on this blog several times in recent weeks. He came back from a coma and life-threatening disease with a new understanding of life, health, consciousness and faith.

Perhaps you’ll be as interested as I was in his answer to Oprah’s question, “Did you see the face of God?” He explains his understanding that God isn’t a person–a he or a she–but an all-loving power that is very real and very close to each one of us. He also explains that anything that would divide and separate us in organized religion doesn’t come from this all-loving, all-inclusive God.

  1. Thank you Ingrid for being insistent with this interview and the book. I have not yet read the book, but I can see in the interview that what this guy saw was really divine Science, a glimpse of God as All-in-all. That view of Life is something one doesn’t forget and it is something that one sees as all-important to one’s life from then on. It does change everything about how we see and experience all things.

  2. Am looking forward to watching the Ophra show. By the way, isn’t the name of Dr. Alexander’s book “Proof of Heaven”?

  3. Wow!! It was so inspiring to observe Dr. Alexander’s humility as he talked with Oprah about this very spiritual experience. It reminded me of a favorite poem of mine — which was written by Mary Peters and is found in the Christian Science Hymnal. The first verse reads:

    Through the love of God our Saviour All will be well;
    Free and changeless is His favor; All must be well;
    Precious is the love that healed us, Perfect is the grace that sealed us,
    Strong the hand stretched forth to shield us; All, all is well.

    • “All is well” were the first words Dr. Alexander told his friends and family when he woke up from the coma. He said it was a message “from the beyond…from God.”

  4. While captured by the dentist chair I listened to my dentist talk about his conservative Christian upbringing and his subsequent evolved conviction that God is the over-arching principle of good for the universe. Although I was unable to comment then, it reminded me that I’m so grateful that so many who might reject God choose instead a newer, more spiritual idea of God.

  5. I finally watched the video. Thanks so much Ingrid for sharing that. What a good validation for prayer and for people of different sects, denominations and religions and not religions getting along. Much to ponder. It is so affirming of Christian Science. Has anyone joined the conversation on Oprah’s website?
